Egypt plots path beyond Pyramids as tourism trebles

Friday, 18 May 2012...With visitor numbers to Egypt returning to the pre-revolution levels of 2010, when the country welcomed a record 360,000 US tourists, it is little wonder the Egyptian Tourist Authority’s New York tourism attaché Mohamed Hegazy feels “very optimistic” for 2012.......

The Red Sea sharks are coming out to play!

They have arrived! We have just had reports from our Egypt office of LOTS of hammerhead sightings along with grey reef, white tip reef and thresher sharks as well as a unique appearance from a Tiger Shark at Daedalus Reef! Wow! The elusive bumphead parrotfish were logged on the Borderlands itinerary whilst mantas have again been active in the north and south. Turtles, and lots of them, have been accompanying divers in the beautiful northern marine park of Ras Mohamed. There are a few last minute spaces left this month if you fancy escaping the 'glorious' weather we have been having...

SHARM TURNING GREEN

Egyptian “government experts are currently working on turning both Sharm El-Sheikh and Luxor into green cities. The Ministry of Environment (MOE) has signed a five-year contract with the South Sinai governorate starting 2012, to reduce harmful emissions in Sharm El-Sheikh, reduce the consumption of water, recycle solid and liquid refuse, and protect biological diversity.

A committee of representatives of the MOE, the Ministry of Tourism, and the South Sinai governorate is meeting regularly to discuss the nuts and bolts of turning Sharm el-Sheikh into an environment-friendly place. Experts believe that Sharm El-Sheikh stands to gain from a green future, both in environmental and economic terms.”
